After three months in Uganda, I boarded a bus for Nairobi. After bouncing along the worst road in months, the bus broke down leaving me somewhere outside of, well, I have no idea. I finally made it to Nairobi at about 9pm after having left the house at 6am. I got up the following morning and made my way to Lake Naivasha just a few miles from Hells Gate National Park. This is the only NP in Kenya in which you don't need a guide and can just hike or bike on your own. And on my own I was. I got up early and rode my bike about 45 minutes to the park entrance. I got there before sunrise, and rounded a bend to see giraffe galloping. A few minutes later I came across my first herd of zebra. Just me and the zebra. Beautiful. I headed back to Nairobi and caught the overnight train to Mombasa a leftover of the British Colonial times. I arrive in Mombasa, celebrate my birthday and head off on another long bus ride to Lamu.
Lamu is another world.
