I arrive in Zurich late. My plane (EasyJet) was easily 2 hours late. I flew in Basel and quickly hopped on the nicest train I've ever been on. (Sorry, Japan).

Martin, my friend that I met in Guatemala with Clare picks me up and we travel to his village. Switzerland is great, because I don't think I'll ever get used to the fact that it REALLY seems to fit the stereotypes (the good ones only of course!). The people are friendly, it is spotless, and the scenery is incredible.

We are here a week before the real high-season buses will come so Martin decides to take me on up a mountain that he used to climb around as a kid. It's cloudy as the gondola ascends but finally the sky clears so we can see valleys in every direction.

We spend one day racing up-and-down mountains with the 1986 Peugot 205 GTI that Martin bought for $500 US. Yes, $500. We check the oil, have a look under the hood and say, "Yeah, this should get us to Istanbul". (Spolier -- It did).

We leave from his Mother's house and pick up some special Swiss-German Croissants. Shape, texture, and consistency of our sad imitations...but with the flavor of German Pretzel. Why couldn't they export those?

We start our adventure with a series of photos in the driveway...Kilometer 0. Or, better said, Kilometer 161,923.
