Costa Rica...Civilization, atleast after Nicaragua. After our worst night of sleep during the whole trip (see Nicaragua) we get up incredibly early, miss a bus, catch a different bus, walk across the crazy Nicaragua/Costa Rica border, and end up on a bus that beats the bus we missed earlier! We haven't slept well and we've travelled all day, and we can't find our hotel. Both guidebooks are incorrect, and everyone on the street gives different directions. The first picture is a shot of the front door of our hotel ($6!) after we finally locate it--easy to miss. The next few are of Clare looking for--and finding!--some of those books for which she did the photo editing. The next two shots are of the two of us calling home to let people know that we aren't headed home anytime soon! We then find ourselves in the Highland town of Orosi to spend about a week at the Montana Linda Hostal and Spanish School. During this week, we visit a sugar cane processing plant and come across a house where they carve coffee plant roots into religious figures, peculiar, but interesting. We are in Costa Rica so we decide to go to the beach. We talk to people and they suggest Dominical. We hate it. Hippies, surfers, and (is it possible?) draft-dodgers. It is also hot, hot, hot. We had seen some nice cabins for rent on the road down to the beach and ask around for suggestions and we hit a goldmine. Alejos Mexican Restaurant and Cabins. Alejo and his family are incredibly friendly and helpful. In fact, they suggest we hike to a waterfall the following morning (rather than taking the $40 horseback ride) and they provide us with fresh coffee, bread, milk, butter, and jam for the experience. The trip to the waterfall is perfect except for the extreme heat on the way back. We recover with some nachos and a fresh, cold Orange-Carrot juice. The view is amazing and we have a hammock. It was sad to leave...
